Citroen FWD before and after the Second World War, then the DS became legendary cars and carried the chevron brand at the pinnacle of innovation. They were ahead of their time so that their careers each lasted twenty years, which is exceptional.
However the faithful Citroënistes dreamed of a luxury car with the French GT worthy of performance. The opportunity came when Citroën took the prestigious Officine Maserati Orsi whose family was separated.
Maserati was working with a talented engineer Giulio Alfieri Maserati father of the great competition of the 50s, the car 250 F among others, world champion in 1956 and with Fangio number of GT competitors Ferrari.
The V8 brand was too much engine to equip the future Citroen.
Alfieri worked out in a few months a very compact V6 2.7 liter engine, block and alloy cylinder head, the angle between the cylinder blocks 90 ° was rather strange compared to other 60 ° V6.
The marriage between the two large firms worked well: the Italian brand was therefore responsible for the engine.
The research department was in charge of Citroën and Robert Opron rolling chassis of the body.
The compact Modena engine could be placed behind the front axle, the house was retained hydropneumatic suspension and a steering system equipped with a booster slave.
The car was of course with 4 disc brakes assisted. With a very low wheelbase, 2950 mm, the new Citroën lent itself to a long tapered body with a long hood and a more compact rear. The finish of the car was luxurious with beautiful leather-wrapped seats. With its fantastic suspension and long wheelbase, the SM was a great highway.
Unfortunately, 1971 saw the introduction of the first speed limits in 1973 and the Yom Kippur War was a major fear fuel shortage which sounded the death knell of the flagship of Citroen. It was built in only 12,920 copies making it a true collector's car.
She has it all, architecture, engine, line, a relative rarity these days. It is relatively unloved in France, our European neighbors are not wrong, especially about the qualities of the model it adds, as the car made the pedigree. Indeed, the first owner of the SM was # René Trautmann famous Citroen and Lancia works driver. It was his personal car, with which he participated in several competitions, including the historic Round Cevennes. The car has been maintained and is presented in good operating condition and presentation.
