For Auction
Coy's Spring Classics March 11, 2014 Lot 110
Estimate: £20,000 - £25,000
Registration Number: KUV 375P
Auction Description
Following its launch at the 1970 Geneva Show, the SM was praised for its power and its chassis, road holding benefiting from the engine's positioning behind the front axle line.
For 1972 the carburettors were replaced by Bosch fuel injection, raising output to 178bhp at 6,250rpm and 172lb.ft at 4,000rpm; the following year engine capacity increased to 2,965cc - using the same V6 that was to power Maserati's new Merak - outputs rising again to 190bhp at 5,750rpm and 181lb.ft at 4,000rpm although performance remained much as the original car; at the same time automatic transmission became optional.
The expensive SM, however, proved something of an anomaly: too fast for Citroen's traditional customers but too quirky for traditional Maserati owners. As a result, when production ceased in 1975, only 12,024 had been built and this fastest and most striking of all Citroens is now very collectable.
We are pleased to be offering this lovely example in Silver with red upholstery, which has covered just over 60,000 km from new and is in good condition throughout.
These models are extremely sought after and rarely do such good examples of these Citroens come up for sale.
Reasonable priced and ready to be driven away, this car presents itself as great investment which can be driven with gusto on the open roads as much as it was when first produced.
The Maserati V6 in full song is a sound to behold.
